Artisit Biography

I sold my first painting in 1978 having just completed my Art 'A' level and I've been quietly selling a wide range of work, predominately aviation art, aerospace art and skyscape art, through my private circles ever since. I started working with oil paints when I was 13 and it's the medium I love the most; there is nothing quite like the creative anticipation of a large blank canvas to test your imaginative skills and artist quality oil paints give you a fabulously rich palette to work with.

As a small boy I'd been fascinated by all things aeronautical and it was that constant interest that started me sketching aircraft before I moved onto expressing myself in colour. The aviation art market has developed tremendously since the late 1970's, largely thanks to the superb works of Robert Taylor, Gerald Coulson and their peers; the standards created by them set the bar for me and many other artists who are drawn to aviation art and aerospace art individually or via the Guild of Aviation Artists which is the worlds best established and respected aviation art association.

In addition to the above, the technical development of my work was also inspired by the outstanding professionalism of many of the old masters including Caravaggio, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rubens, Turner, Repin to name just a few. Whilst producing high quality aviation art was my initial goal, I've tried to broaden the subject matter to a much wider theme of aerospace art including the full splendor of the skyscapes within the atmosphere and to focus on the earth as a portrait subject in its widest sense. In addition to creating aerospace art, astrophysics & astronomy has been a constant interest for 30yrs and to have so much of our art inwardly focused on a single particle within the fabric of the universe seems almost dismissive of the panoramic intensity of the wider cosmos.

In our journeys beyond the stratosphere - art goes first. Alongside my aviation art I've sold numerous paintings of planetary scenes, galaxies, deep space nebulas and well know icons of the space age, such as the NCC 1701 Enterprise, alongside some of my own science fiction designs.

After spending my childhood years looking up and dreaming, I took to the skies as a hanglider pilot in my early 20's and then moved onto my PPL in 1988. I now own and operate a Russian Yak55m G-NOIZ based at White Waltham in Berkshire and have been competing in aerobatic competitions since 1996; I also do a small number of events as a display pilot. I've been fortunate to have flown and owned several interesting types over the years including a Fournier RF4D, Starduster Too, Pitts Special, and Extra 300, of these the Yak55m has been a particular love with its presence, power and character. With 700hrs of "upside down" time in powerful aircraft I've been fortunate to have visited many of the sunlit platforms that I love to paint.

During 2007 I set up Aeronauts.com as an on-line aerospace art gallery for my original works and limited edition prints. From my studio in Henley on Thames I'm very happy to be able to focus on my creative passions and deliver what I hope is perceived as a consistent high quality of work to my clients. I complete an average of 25 paintings a year and each of them takes about 2 months elapsed time to paint depending on research & detail requirements.
