Earth is a pretty planet by any standard and holds an increasingly significant place in all of our hearts. The painting is of the wide cresent of Earth from 100,000 miles towards the moon. The Earth-rise pictures taken by the latter Apollo missions became the most widely reproduced images of all time.

As the world's astromomers scan hundreds of star systems for possible planets we will continue to wonder about the detailed combination of events and criteria that allows complex life to flourish on Earth. I hope we learn to look after it and minimise the negative impact we appear to be making. 100% of all the life we know of depends on this fragile biosphere.
